Job Searching

Use your Job Search LOG to write down jobs you want to apply to.

Create a username and password for the sites that allow you to log in. (I would use your email address as your user name and the same password each time so that you don't forget.)

Click to visit the sites below and begin your job search

www.indeed.com: click on "sign in" in the top right hand corner and then click "create an account free" next to where it says, not a user.

  • When searching for jobs:

    • First type in a job you want and type in your location "Boston, MA"

    • Next, modify "distance" on the LEFT hand side. Do you want to work anywhere within 25 miles? Or 5 miles?

    • If you like the jobs that are listed, look on the RIGHT side of the screen where it says "Get new jobs for this search by email" and type in your email address. Then click "save alert". Now you will get email alerts when there are new jobs posted for your search.

    • You can then type in a different jobs and get email alerts for all of them!

www.idealist.org: click on "sign up" in the top right hand corner and then click "create" on the left hand side of the box that pops up.

  • When searching for jobs:

    • First, you need to fill out the three sections at the top. The first one on the left says, "TYPE" - click the dropdown arrow and then click on "JOBS" (if you want internships or volunteer work, then click on those).

    • The next space you fill in is the job title you want

    • The last space on the right is your location (you can just type in your zip code)

    • THEN, if you like the jobs that are listed, look on the right hand side of the page and highlighted in green it says "save this search". Click there and it will prompt you to get alert emails about new posts.

http://boston.craigslist.org/: go to the "jobs" section on the right hand site of the screen and click on the areas that interest you.

  • When you want to apply jobs

    • Make sure you put the title of the job in the subject line of the email

    • Write a message explaining who you are

    • Attach your resume and sign your full name/cell phone number (*Please see the handout from class for an example of what your email should look like).
